The Los Angeles-born and bred and now New Mexico-based Singer-Songwriter Charlie Overbey, who Lemmy labeled the “Punk Rock Spy In The House Of Honky Tonk" and Rolling Stone hailed as an “LA Cult Figure” has released his all-star-filled career retrospective album In Good Company out today on all streaming platforms and limited edition physical product available HERE.
For the album, Charlie revisited decades of his writing and recording sessions from studios around the world to craft the new songs that would make up the career-spanning album. “It would be a record that told my story,” says Charlie. “A record that I could be proud of and would be a legacy record for me.” Part of that legacy is the musicians with whom he has worked and befriended over the years who are contributors on the album, which include Nils Lofgren, Marcus King, Jaime Wyatt, Charlie Starr, Rami Jaffee, Jimmy Vivino, Duane Betts, Eddie Spaghetti, Chris Masterson, Danny B Harvey, Sarah Gayle Meech and more. “I was just full of so much gratitude for all these incredible people for stepping in and saying, ‘I'd love to do this.’” says Overbey. “It's been a real blessing. Everyone's been amazing, and to get to work.”
Overbey released three fiery singles leading into the album release, all of which debuted on and received support from SiriusXM’s Outlaw Country station. The first is a southern rock-tinged romp called “Champagne, Cocaine, Cadillacs & Cash,” featuring Marcus King on Electric Guitars, B3 Organ, and vocals, with additional vocals from Jaime Wyatt. Holler Country described it as having “the thumping swagger of Waylon administered with a jab of jittery Muscle Shoals country funk.” The second single, “Life of Rock and Roll,” which could be considered the theme song for the album, pays homage to the rock heroes who have come before and are no longer with us. Fittingly, the song features rock royalty Duane Betts on guitar, with guest vocals from rock legends Taime Downe and Eddie Spaghetti, and the soulful Courtney Santana on backing vocals. The third single, “If We Ever Get Out,” is both a song of hope and desperation. It’s about being at the end of your rope, knowing that something has got to change. It’s holding on to that small glimmer of hope, which is the thing that keeps you going, and features Blackberry Smoke guitarist Charlie Starr.
Charlie’s first success in the music industry came when his cowpunk outfit Custom Made Scare landed a deal with Side One Dummy Records in the late 90’s. But before the band’s debut album dropped, Charlie had been on the run from the law for years, finally turning himself in and spending a year in prison. The same week he was released, the band immediately hit the road and toured heavily into the new millennium alongside seminal punk acts such as Suicidal Tendencies, Social Distortion, Agent Orange, Zeke, and REO Speedealer.
In addition to music, Charlie found a creative outlet in fashion. What started as a hobby of making eye-catching glam rock head attire for himself has turned into the very successful bespoke fashion company Lone Hawk Hats, of which Charlie is the sole craftsman. Each hat is handcrafted from vintage shells from the early 20s through the 70s, which, according to Charlie, was a time when “quality was held dearly above quantity.” Each piece is like a sculpture, inspired by its muse and the customer, and crafted using environmentally safe materials. Charlie’s Lone Hawk pieces have been worn by artists such as Lainey Wilson, members of the Foo Fighters, Sheryl Crow, Marcus King, Tim McGraw & Faith Hill, along with the cast from 1883 and 1923 in addition to being the focal point in a Stella McCartney campaign. Select styles and pieces are available online at the Lone Hawk website and in person at the Honeywood Vintage shops in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Highland Park and just outside Santa Fe in Madrid, New Mexico.
Charlie will play an album release show at the Echoplex on Sunday, July 28th, followed by a fall tour with more dates to be announced soon.
