Nashville-based recording artist Bonner Black opens her new song “If It’s Gone” with a line that immediately demands attention: “I quit doing cocaine after you moved to California, weed hasn’t gotten me high since my 21st birthday.” It’s bold, unexpected and refreshingly unfiltered...and exactly the kind of honesty that makes Black’s songwriting so compelling.

With more than a decade of touring under her belt and nearly 1,700 custom songs written for other people, Black has spent years honing her ability to turn real-life experiences into memorable stories. On “If It’s Gone,” she puts that skill to work, tackling the complicated aftermath of a relationship with a conversational delivery and a healthy dose of humor.

There’s no romanticizing the situation or dressing up the hard parts. Instead, Black finds the funny in the wreckage, pairing sharp one-liners and hard-earned observations with an infectious, head-bopping melody. The result is a song that feels genuine and relatable without ever taking itself too seriously.

At its heart, “If It’s Gone” delivers a deceptively simple message: “Can’t fix it if it’s broke, and if it’s gone just let it go.”It’s advice that sounds obvious until you’ve actually had to follow it. Black captures the difficult realization that sometimes there’s nothing left to repair, and that moving forward means accepting it rather than continuing to hold on.

“If It’s Gone” appears on Black’s new five-track EP, Little Bird In A Big Sky, which showcases her knack for pairing sharp storytelling with organic indie-Americana vibes. The EP also reflects another defining part of Black’s life: her unexpected passion for birding. What began as a hobby in 2021 during a difficult period eventually became a creative outlet and a major part of her life, inspiring the EP’s title track and connecting her songwriting to the natural world.

That passion now extends to the road with The Flyway Tour, as Black joins fellow touring musician Walker Burroughs to follow the Mississippi Flyway. The tour combines live music with bird walks and visits to nature centers, bringing together Black’s two fervors, while giving audiences a chance to experience both her music and the outdoors in a unique way.

Ultimately, “If It’s Gone” is a reminder that letting go doesn’t have to be devastating. Sometimes it can be liberating...and sometimes the best way through heartbreak is to laugh at the chaos, tell the truth and move the hell on.
