Interview with Brother Maven

Thank you for chatting with us! Tell us a little bit about how you got into music?

My dad showed me how to play Sweet Home Alabama on the guitar when I was seven years old. I haven't put it down since!

Who inspires you, musically and personally?

Musically: Sting, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Bryan Adams, Tommy Emmanuel

Personally: My fiancée - I am a better person because of her.

- My mom - she led a kind and loving life. I intend to replicate that.

- Brian and Jessica (my brother-in-law and sister) - they own a sourdough pizza restaurant in Knoxville, TN and they are absolutely killing it. Inspires me to always put that kind of effort and energy into my craft as a musician.

- Dalton - my best friend. I am always learning from how he leads his family.

- Joel Burns (bandmate) - he's a historian! He inspires me to do my own studying.

Is there anyone in your family that you can credit as being instrumental in your decision to go into the music field?

My parents. My dad for my love for the guitar. My mom played piano. Between the two of them and my sister, Jessica, also a musician, I learned to love music.

What was the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given about pursuing a career in music?

My grandmother (she's 100 yrs old) has always encouraged me to do what makes me happy. It's so simple. There's many different opportunities in the music industry. I've always kept my soul in check, making sure I am loving whatever it is I find myself participating in musically.

How would you describe Brother Maven’s sound? Any artists similar?

American Rock/Soul. Daniel (our lead singer) brings the soul vibe to the group. He's always been influenced by vocalists like Kenny Loggins and Michael McDonald. The rest of us (Joel, Jeremy, and myself) have all been influenced by groups like Van Halen, Toto, The Beatles, and The Eagles. We bring the rock element/sound to Brother Maven.

How long has the band been around?

We started playing together as the "Daniel Mason Band" in 2018. In 2020, we figured Daniel was getting too much of a big head, so we renamed the band "Brother Maven."

Is there an artist out there on your bucket list you would like to collaborate with?

I think we would all agree on someone like Chris Stapleton.

Since every project has a story, what’s the story behind your newest single "I Just Wanna Love You?"

Well, Daniel is the primary lyricist in the group. So let's hope the song is about his wife. But he brought the melody/lyric to us with a basic chord progression and the rest of us helped arrange the tune by changing up the chord progression, adding an instrumental section, and considering outside help for some keys parts. It's truly a collaborative effort!

If Brother Maven threw a party and could invite one other band to play, who would it be?

I'd say... CCR.

What is on the horizon for Brother Maven? Anything else you would like to add?

We are just continuing to write/record music! Keep an eye out wherever you listen to music: Spotify, Apple Music, Limewire, Amazon Music, etc. We are also looking forward to playing in new cities this year (thanks to a music festival we played called "The Rock Boat"). We have picked up house shows (yup, shows in people's houses) that we are excited about playing this year. Reach out to us on our website if you'd like us to come play at YOUR house!
