Melody's Miscellaneous: Interview with Jason Buell

Jason Buell is a powerhouse vocalist that continues to break the mold as a new artist. Born and raised in a small Northern California town didn’t stop country music singer/songwriter him from chasing a big city dream.

Jason’s love for music began at a very young age. He was 8 years old when he first heard Mel McDaniel’s “Baby’s Got Her Blue Jeans On,” memorizing every lyric. Growing up, his mom worked as a bartender at a local country bar, where artists played live music every Friday and Saturday night. “Country music has been a part of my life since I can remember," Jason explains. "My mom is also an Elvis junky and when I was a little boy, I would always try to sing like him.”

Thoughts of a music career didn’t start until after he was married and had children. Singing his first solo at church was the first time people outside of his family and friends told him, “Hey you can sing!” It was then he started believing in himself.

Jason moved to Nashville, Tennessee where he would spend the next ten years honing his craft and sharing the stage with some of the biggest names in music has been his dream. With hard work and dedication, he has opened for some of country music’s biggest stars including Thomas Rhett, Brett Eldredge, Mark Chestnutt, Phil Vassar and many more. With a sound that blends traditional country and today’s modern sound, Jason has captured the attention of the music industry.

Jason’s new single "Light Me Up" was released on August 2, 2022 and has already garnered a lot of attention of country radio. We recently had the opportunity to chat with Jason about his life and career.

Hi, Jason! Excited to be talking with you today. You recently released your debut country single “Light Me Up.” Can you give us a little background about the song?

"Light Me Up" was written by one of my best friends, Kyle Campbell. He is a fantastic writer. It was written about my wife and I. We have been going to firework shows together since we were kids - literally. And, moving to Tennessee nearly 10 years ago, fireflies and summer nights have been a huge part of our lives.

Growing up in California, did you listen to a lot of country music?

Absolutely!Northern California is very underrated for country music, but it is and has always been huge there! I have been listening to country my whole life. Now, that being said, I love Rock 'n Roll and as a youngster I listened to a lot of it!

You’ve said that it was your wife that entered you in a singing competition. Do you think you would have pursued music otherwise, or did she give you the confidence and support you needed?

This is really a hard question to answer. Of course, there's no doubt that my wife has given me confidence over the years. She is also my "Simon Cowell"- flat notes, etc...basically anything that I can be better at, she pushes me! She has a great ear and doesn't pull punches. But, we have spent a lifetime together and my music career is not really mine -it's ours. The hopes and dreams that we have are in both of our hearts. For me, without my wif, nothing in my life would have been possible. (She's going to be mad for me saying all this!)

If you could sing a duet with any artist, who would you choose?

Thats easy...Jennifer Nettles! There are some other artists that I would love to work with as well, but Jennifer Nettles has been at the top of my list list for too many years to count.

What else can fans expect from you in 2022?

September of this year we will have some more music online. We will also do a second single, probably towards the beginning of 2023, and at that point we will be looking forward to spring and summer and a lot of touring. We will be doing a radio tour over the next couple of months, as well!
